How to Wash a Beanie (Without Ruining It)

Beanies are a delicate part of your wardrobe. At Beanie Guys, we only recommend hand washing — and here's why.

Your beanie goes through a lot. Cold mornings, long days, sweat, and rain. But toss it in the washing machine and you risk shrinking, stretching, or permanently distorting the shape you love. Hand washing takes an extra five minutes and keeps your beanie looking great for years longer.

Why Hand Washing Is Always Better

Machine washing — even on a gentle cycle — exposes your beanie to agitation, heat, and spin forces it was never designed for. For wool, merino, and premium knit beanies, that's a recipe for disaster. Even acrylic blends can lose their shape or develop pilling faster when machine washed repeatedly.

Hand washing gives you full control. You decide the water temperature, the pressure, and the handling — and your beanie stays in the shape it was made in.

Know Your Beanie's Material First

Check the label before you start. The material determines how careful you need to be.

  • Wool & merino wool — most delicate; cold water only, always hand wash
  • Acrylic — more forgiving but still benefits from hand washing
  • Cotton — handles slightly warmer water but gentle is still best
  • Blended fabrics — follow the care instructions for the most delicate fibre in the blend

How to Hand Wash a Beanie

What you'll need:

  • A clean basin or sink
  • Cold water
  • A small amount of gentle detergent or wool wash

Steps:

  1. Fill the basin with cold water and add a small squeeze of detergent
  2. Submerge the beanie and gently squeeze the water through — don't scrub or wring
  3. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes
  4. Drain and refill with clean cold water to rinse
  5. Gently press out excess water — never twist or wring
  6. Lay flat on a clean towel to dry

How to Dry a Beanie Without Losing Its Shape

Drying is just as important as washing. Get this wrong and even a perfect hand wash won't save your beanie.

  • Never put it in the dryer — heat causes shrinking and distortion
  • Never hang it to dry — the wet weight will stretch it out
  • Always dry flat — reshape while damp and leave on a clean towel or flat drying rack
  • Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading

How Often Should You Wash a Beanie?

You don't need to wash after every wear. A good rule of thumb:

  • Every 3–5 wears for everyday use
  • After heavy sweating or outdoor activity
  • At the end of the season before storing

Over-washing breaks down fibres faster — less is more when it's not visibly dirty.

The Bottom Line

Hand washing is the only method we recommend at Beanie Guys. It takes a little more time, but your beanie will thank you for it. Cold water, gentle detergent, and drying flat — that's all it takes to keep your beanie in top shape for the long haul.
